The initiative will invest more than 140,080 USD in each game it enrols, and it will support not just tiny teams but also large teams with dozens or more engineers. The Japanese tech giant's plans were revealed during a live-streamed event from the southern Chinese city of Chengdu on Tuesday to revive the China Hero Project program, which had been halted owing to COVID-19. Sony announced that it will publish Lost Soul Aside and Convallaria, two titles from the previous two rounds. The China Hero Project launched its first two batches of games in 2017 and 2019, respectively, and has backed 17 titles, seven of which have reached the market.
It is the latest step in Sony's years-long strategy in China, which resulted in a lucrative exclusivity deal with the Chinese hit game "Genshin Impact" outside of the China Hero Project. It was little known prior to its 2019 release, but it quickly became one of the world's most profitable games. Sony announced the formation of the "China Game Production" team to manage Chinese-made games in order to expedite its spread. After entering China in 2014, Sony's gaming-focused division, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), now employs more than 100 workers in Shanghai. Tatsuo Eguchi, president of SIE Shanghai, stated that the success of Genshin Impact convinced Sony's management that Chinese games are significant, and that Sony is committing more resources to the region than ever before.
